Strategic Financial Projection Models

Nathan Dickmeyer has developed a spreadsheet-based financial projection model that assists colleges and universities in strategic planning and in linking plans to budgets. The model allows colleges and universities to test tuition, financial aid, compensation, and new program strategic options. The model also allows universities to test the impact of the timing, size and financing of capital projects. The model produces full financial statements for all fourteen fiscal years of the projections, including statements of cash flow. This model is a powerful and graphic tool for interactively demonstrating the financial feasibility of strategic plans to boards of trustees, lenders, agencies, and accreditation teams.

DC LLC has converted to the open source philosophy. By sharing these spreadsheets with the higher education community, everyone benefits. Smaller institutions with limited budgets will gain access to otherwise expensive software. Skilled users at institutions may suggest improvements that can be sent to Nathan Dickmeyer and incorporated in the base model for wider distribution. While the developer does not benefit directly from sale of the model, more opportunities for training, customizing, and calibrating may accrue to the firm.

Two versions for Excel on XP are available for download. Version 9.0 is intended for large institutions. It has the capacity to track and merge data for several campuses and schools (of business, of law, etc.), each with different enrollment patterns, tuition rates and faculty salary levels.

Version 10.0 is intended for single campus institutions (although limited expansion is possible). It has a more modular design such that either simple or complex enrollment and expense projection submodels may be engaged.

Both models have very complete guides with explanations of the data input forms, the report formats and the equations that drive the projections.

Both models contain macros. Before downloading, macro security should be set to medium. (Click “Tools” on the toolbar. Click the tab, “Security.” Click the button, “Macro Security.” Click the circle for “Medium.”) Each time the model is opened, you will need to “Enable” the macros. It is best to download and save, rather than download to run.(Not configured for Vista.)
